Korea’s Self-Driving Taxis Limited to Night Routes in Gangnam and Seocho
Published: · Source: rss.donga.com

Self-driving taxis in Korea are currently limited to seven vehicles operating only from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in parts of Seoul’s Gangnam and Seocho districts. In the United States, Waymo, the robotaxi company owned by Alphabet, Google’s parent, is operating in major cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles and Atlanta. The Financial Times estimated Waymo’s revenue last year at about $350 million, or roughly 460 billion won. In China, companies such as Baidu and WeRide are also carrying paying passengers in large cities including Beijing and Shanghai. Korea’s slow rollout is presented not as a technology problem but as a regulatory hurdle. Hyundai Motor Group operates autonomous taxis in California through its U.S. joint venture Motional.
