Regulatory barriers trap Korea’s autonomous driving, with Level 4 shuttle limited to 4.8 km
Published: · Source: rss.donga.com

Autonomous-driving startup Autonomous a2z operates Roi, an eight-seat Level 4 shuttle supervised remotely without a driver on board, but the vehicle is rarely seen beyond a 4.8 km route from Cheonggye Plaza to the area near Gwangjang Market at Cheonggye 5-ga in Seoul. The reason is that it has not been broadly approved to run on public roads. The original report said all Korean autonomous-driving companies combined have logged only 13.06 million km of autonomous driving, far behind Tesla in the United States, which has accumulated 16 billion km of data. Limited test routes and requirements scattered across multiple laws make operation difficult unless every condition is met. Regulations that lag technology are being cited as a factor slowing Korea’s testing and data accumulation. Source: rss.donga.com
