Hyundai Mobis Lamp Unit Sale Dispute Widens as Subsidiary Union Strikes
Published: · Source: rss.donga.com

The dispute over Hyundai Mobis’s planned sale of its lamp business is expanding as a subsidiary union continues a strike. About 700 members of the Hyundai IHL labor union, a Hyundai Mobis subsidiary, held a rally at 2 p.m. on the 13th in front of Hyundai Mobis’s headquarters on Teheran-ro in Gangnam, Seoul, to oppose the sale. After Hyundai Mobis decided in January to sell the lamp division to global auto parts company OPmobility, the Hyundai IHL union said it could not accept the decision and began a full strike on the 27th of last month. The union, together with the Korean Metal Workers’ Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, is demanding that Hyundai Mobis, as the prime contractor, take responsibility and enter negotiations. Another subsidiary, Motras, is also set to join the strike next month. Market observers see the case as reflecting concerns raised when the so-called Yellow Envelope Act was proposed last August.
