China-bound travel demand has continued to grow since the visa-free policy took effect in November 2024, even amid high inflation, high oil prices and unfavorable exchange rates. According to travel industry sources and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport data cited on the 14th, Korea-China air passengers reached 4.39 million in the first quarter of this year, up 25.1% from a year earlier and above the pre-pandemic 2019 level. Flight operations rose 7.7% to 29,078, while March outbound travelers increased 33.9%. On the 24th of last month, the ministry allocated 23 of 35 international air traffic rights for 2026 to China routes. Routes to Beijing and Shanghai, as well as second- and third-tier cities such as Hangzhou and Chengdu, were expanded. Shanghai demand stood out, with Nol Universe reporting an increase of about 77%, prompting airlines to deploy larger aircraft ahead of the summer peak season. Source: rss.donga.com
